Update: Scooter Recovered (I Think)

Last week I mentioned that my motor scooter had been stolen from in front of my house. Well, a few days ago I got a voicemail message from the Albemarle Police saying they had recovered my scooter and had a suspect in custody. While I can't seem to get any answers out of the police about (1) who stole it, (2) where the bike is now, (3) what condition it's in, or (4) if/when I'll ever be able to regain custody of the thing, I'm hoping this will all be straightened out soon so I can get the scooter back and assess the damage. I'm just glad it wasn't dumped in the Rivanna River, which I've been told is one of the more frequent fates of stolen scooters in this area...

p.s. I haven't been given any details about how the Albemarle Police tracked down the scooter, so I don't know who to thank for doing so, so I'll just have to offer a blanket word of appreciation for anyone who had anything to do with recovering it. Thanks!

Great, now see if you can get them to find my wife's 2004 TNG Venice that was stolen from Belmont last month. I guess if you are a member of the city council they actually look for your scooter...
Glad to hear you may get it back. Maybe you can see about making it easier for scooter owners to get these things back? I would even go for manditory registration of all scoots of any displacement.

Good to hear the news, Dave. Hope your scoot hasn't been trashed (as many stolen vehicles are). I hope your insurance will cover any damages.

Does C-ville have a problem with stolen scooters? Why is that?

Because when you don't know how to drive, they're easier to joy ride around on than a car is. And when you have a housing project smack in the middle of an upscale neighborhood chances are the juvenile delinquents will get envious and decide they might be entitled.

Glad things worked out for you with the scooter.

The young man that was found with my scooter (one Buford Allen Bollinger) lives in Esmont and will be tried on 9/27/07 -- I have been subpoenaed to testify as a witness. Mr. Bollinger and/or an accomplice of Mr. Bollinger's did quite a hatchet job on the scooter (it's barely operable) and even spraypainted it black for me (thanks dude, but next time use painter's tape -- or better yet, take it to a detailer). I'm just hoping I can get a settlement of some sort so I can get a replacement scooter and put all of this behind me...

You're implying that two-wheeled vehicles are inherently more fun to use that four-wheeled vehicles. I think I can agree with that.

Though I have to agree with the stroke of "real men of genius" here: there's absolutely nothing suspicious about a nice-looking Piaggio that's been spray-painted black and hacked into a barely operable running state.

Which reminds me - you probably ought to go to your local dealer and pay (yeah, you'll probably have to fork over some dough) to get an estimate done on the damages. A professional's eye might catch all that's been done, though I'd suspect the scoot's been totalled. You'll also have those facts to present the judge when it comes time.

Thanks Chris. It's nice to have a motorcycle guru in the family! I am going to take the scooter to the shop tomorrow and get an estimate on damage done....
