Good news: I completed a 10-mile run today (new personal record) in preparation for the Cville 10-Miler. Bad news: It was at the track. And the streets of Charlottesville hardly resemble a running track. So I either need to use the powers of the Mayoralty to flatten the hills of Charlottesville between now and March 29 (now there's a constructive use for mountaintop removal!) or I better start training on some hilly roads....Either way, I've got my work cut out for me.

Hey, if you had the discipline to churn out 40 monotonous laps on the track, you'll be able to handle the varied and scenic 10-miler course with no problem.
Congrats! And running on the roads is so much more entertaining and motivating than the boredom of the track. You'll do great, Dave!
i'm so proud of you bro! ever think of being a fitness coach in your freetime?
Thanks all for your encouragement!
And Lani, thanks for the laugh -- me as a fitness coach, ha!
Good for you! Really, it's so much easier to run 10 miles (hilly or not) when you've got cheering crowds and the general adrenaline rush of a race to keep you moving. You can do it!!!!
Congratulations Dave. You're adding years to your life! Now, get charging and challenge your own time and limits! If you have access to a treadmill do some five minute intervals at close to 100% of your capacity with the belt set at a 6% slope. After 5 minutes, cool down for two minutes by walking and then do it again. Do this for an hour once a week and your times and your bodies ability to supply oxygen to your muscles will both improve. Remember to warm up first. If you don't have access to a treadmill and you want to try it you can go to the AFC with me as my guest.
I'll see you at the races!
Cordially,
Kevin Cox
Thanks much Kevin -- excellent advice, and I will try that next time I'm at the gym.
